This one really interests me – is austerity a necessity or a political choice?

You hear people claim both. Obviously I’m not surprised that the Tories want to cut back on public spending but is it something they HAVE to do? Obviously the ‘financial markets’ reacted to Liz Truss’s tax cuts – would something similar happen if we didn’t have austerity?

Not looking for a political fight here. Genuinely interested.

We’ve got to balance the books somehow. We’ve had furlough, the economy has been destroyed by lockdown. We can’t just keep spending.

It’s a point but I’m personally pro the growth plan that Liz Truss tried a month ago. I think the markets were stupid to react as they did. We should have gone with her plan in order to get ourselves out of the recession. Austerity won’t work.

It’s very scary – a pub near me that has been open for years has had to close down. The mix of inflation and bills going up, combined with customers having less spending power has made the situation impossible for them. Genuinely worrying how many other businesses will be in the same position.

My High Street was already on its knees before this…it’ll be a wonder if there’s a High Street left.
