Euros Adds Billions to UK Economy

In the past four weeks, the British economy has been boosted by £3.1billion thanks to the Euro football championship.

Football is a sociable sport – and not just for those who are lucky enough to get tickets for the matches. People gather at home or in the pub – and that means buying food and drink to go with the entertainment. During the Euros matches, seventeen million people watch the football in the pub, with an estimated spend of over £70million during the past month because of the matches – plus a further £54million on food. This doesn’t even take into account the added groceries to our shopping carts in recent weeks for at-home gatherings, or the parking and travel costs for those travelling to meet with friends to watch together.

In fact, during the finals on July 14th, it’s estimated that pubs poured an EXTRA ten million pints in one night!

The boost is excellent news for the economy, and especially the hospitality sector. Retail sales had dropped previously by 0.2% in June – compared to a 4.9% rise in June 2023. The Euros came at the right time to provide a much-needed boost to the economy.
